The unit concentrates its activities on research and development projects related to the three focal points:
- environmental issues of shipping and ports
- intermodal transport chains linked with Shortsea shipping
- interdisciplinary environmental research supporting Marine Spatial Planning and Integrated Coastal Zone Management
The unit mainly address these issues in the Baltic Sea area, but regional development of Satakunta and Selkämeri are of special interest to us.
The Environmental Research and Regional Development Unit is part of the University Consortium of Pori that is a Centre of four Universities.
The Environmental Research and Regional Development unit also hosts Shortsea Promotion Centre Finland that is recognised by both the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications and the European Commission as a centre representing Finland. The goal of SPC Finland is to promote shortsea shipping by dissemination of information and serving the actors and interest groups in the field.
The unit is part of the Pori University Consortium, a multi-science environment formed by five universities. The University Consortium is located in the old Finlayson cotton factory. The same building houses, for example, the Regional Council of Satakunta, the Employment and Economic Development Centre (TE-Centre) and a number of different companies.
